International Day of the Midwife

Midwives - and people with midwifery skills - are the main caregivers for women and their new-borns during pregnancy, labour, childbirth and in the post-delivery period. Skilled midwives are the difference between life and death for close to 300,000 women each year, and ten times that many infants.

In 2015, International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March, will highlight the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights.
