The European Union (EU) Commissioner Mr. Christos Stylianides visited Jordan on 29th of January, where he visited the Zaatari refugee camp which currently hosts more than 80000 Syrian refugees.

The EU delegation visited spaces for several humanitarian organizations delivering assistance to Syrian refugees living in the camp. Their final destination was at the UNFPA Women Safe Center, in particular the women’s clinic, which is implemented by our partner Jordan Health Aid Society (JHAS).

Mr. Stylianides was impressed when he saw the load of work & achievements done in the clinic; he toured the clinic and was briefed on the full package of services which is provided to the Syrians. He showed his admiration on the delivery unit, the only life-saving service provided in the camp, where he met the moms & the new born babies.

During his visit, Commissioner Stylianides also announced an increase in humanitarian funding for Jordan by €20 million for 2015. It’s worth mentioning that more than 120,000 women in Za`tri have received reproductive health services since the opening of the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, supported clinics in 2012.

Each day, between 60 to 80 women receive different types of health services such as antenatal care, deliveries, postnatal care, family planning, management of sexual transmitted infections, health awareness and other services.

Since the UNFPA delivery unit opened in the Zaatari camp in July 2013, the facility has registered more than 2,500 deliveries among young Syrian women and girls, working 24/7, ensuring all births are attended by skilled health care professionals and being a vital nerve in the camp for ensuring women and girls receiving reproductive health services.
